Lactulose Oral Solution is a form of sugar, which helps to treat constipation. It is considered a laxative and facilitates the easy passing of stool by introducing water into the bowel. It is also used for treating hepatic encephalopathy (a condition related to liver disease where the patient has confusion, tremors, and altered consciousness levels).
Lactulose Oral Solution may be taken with or without food as per your choice. Take this medication exactly as your physician has prescribed. Use this medicine regularly to get the most benefit from it, and to reduce the risk of missing a dose. Take this medicine at the same time each day so that you never forget to take it. Your dose may need to be adjusted. Do not take this solution more than you are advised to take. If you miss a dose, do not take it when the time of the second dose is near. This medicine takes at least 2 days to work. Inform your healthcare expert if you remain constipated beyond 3 days.
Lactulose Oral Solution is supposed to act by reducing the concentration of ammonia in the blood, which is a toxin to the brain. Therefore, it can help enhance your brain function and diminish symptoms of hepatic encephalopathy if taken according to prescription.
Lactulose is used in the treatment of constipation which is manifested through infrequent bowel movements and hard and dry stools. It is also used in patients with hepatic encephalopathy which is a serious liver condition with manifestations of confusion, tremors, and decreased levels of consciousness.
It takes about 2-3 days to notice the effects of the medication. Consult your doctor if you still feel constipated after 3 days of taking Lactulose.
Yes, Lactulose is a laxative that softens stools by drawing water from other parts of the body towards the large intestine. It's also used to decrease ammonia levels in the blood of patients suffering from liver disorders.
You should take Lactulose for as long as your doctor has advised. You can also take it for as long as constipation lasts, which can be up to a week. The treatment may be longer for hepatic encephalopathy, even several months.
Lactulose is contraindicated in patients who have an allergy to it or an intolerance of lactose-a condition whereby the body can't metabolize lactose. Also, lactulose is contraindicated in patients suffering from galactosemia, which is a rare health issue where the body cannot metabolize galactose.
